Fitness Center

Fitness CenterLast year, the Physical Education Dept. of Plattsburgh High School began a program to enhance the fitness and health of the general student population.  Currently, students can choose to use the fitness center or walk/run on the track.  Next year, they hope to expand their programs to offer individualized fitness programs for students who do not necessarily participate in competitive sports, but wish to get/remain fit.

The fitness center also offers popular exercise alternatives, such as DDR, to students who want to exercise, but don’t enjoy the traditional weight training/treadmill/stair climber style machines.  Stair climber PHS fitness centerFor those who are not into video games, DDR or Dance Dance Revolution, is more of an intense cardio workout than the typical couch potato video game.  Players must dance specific steps, determined by the game module, to a vigorous beat pressing buttons with their feet!  According to Lori Latremore, they hope to acquire a Nintendo Wii, another game system that emphasizes intense physical activity.

Commit to be Fit
Members of the PHS faculty and staff meet four times a week to improve their health through fitness training in a program called “Commit to be Fit.” Focused on aerobic endurance, they begin with 30 minutes of cardio exercise and the move to the fitness room to participate in another half hour of strength training. Participants alternate working on arm and leg strength and work on the core muscle groups (abdominal/back) every day.  These strength training exercises are important not only for general fitness and well-being, but also for the prevention of osteoporosis.

Fitness Room
The PHS fitness room is open to students, faculty and staff after school from 2:45 to 4:30, if a coach or Certified teacher is present (safety first!).  Upon request, the Certified teachers, Lori Latremore, Mike Bordeau and Brad LaValley can design an exercise program to suit their needs.  Coaches also design programs for student athletes.
