Family Life Science is structure is structured as a vehicle to explore and develop strategies to engage and empower senior year students as they experience the process of young adulthood. As prospective parents, there are numerous issues to address in an effort to increase awareness, knowledge and skills to effectively function within the demands of current family styles and dynamics. Per New York State Parenting Education learning Standards, the Family Life Science curriculum focuses on practical hands-on adult skills necessary to enhance individual growth into a functional productive member of the family unit with the ability to adapt to consumer economics and future social diversity and. Areas of study include: Relationships, Societal, Demands and Expectations of Young Adulthood, Household Function, Family Structure, Stresses, Marriage Options and dynamics, Human Sexuality and Intimacy, Pregnancy, Parenthood and Child Development, Community Resources. Decision-making skills, communication and self-esteem are all embedded throughout each area of study as integral components for success.

Health Education

Target Audience: Sophomore Health or transfer students who have not taken health.
Prerequisite: None
Health is a mandated course designed to foster positive attitudes, awareness, and knowledge intended to enhance personal health and quality of living. This class provides opportunities to acquire experiences and skills to encourage students to engage in healthy behaviors through exposure to speakers, projects, interactive activities and visual aids. The curriculum includes human growth and development, emotional health, nutrition, environmental health, family life, diseases and disorders, consumer health, substance abuse, safety, first aid and community health. Health literacy is to obtain, interpret, and understand health information and related services in a custom which are health enhancing.
