Click here to download the Grades 9 - 12 Summer Reading List
May 2008
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Research shows all students experience learning losses when not engaged in constructive activities over the summer. At a time when it is more important than ever that we make every effort to support and improve our students’ academic achievement, with invaluable input from staff, students and parents, we are continuing the REQUIRED summer reading program for all students entering grades 9-12. Attached is a suggested summer reading list from which students may choose any title. However, students may choose to read any age-appropriate book for this program.
The amount of required reading is as follows:
Students might find that the books they choose may be required reading for their classes during the school year. If so, students will have to re-read the book with their class at a later date.
A copy of our suggested summer reading list will be sent in the last report card and will be distributed to local bookstores such as Borders, Barnes & Noble, Sam’s Club, Wal-Mart, the Cornerstone Bookstore and local libraries. In addition, it is posted on our district web site. Books are also available on loan at the PHS library during summer school hours. Parents are encouraged to assist their students with making their reading selections.
Students must read their books prior to the opening of school on September 3. In the fall, teachers will assess and grade the students on their summer reading. Assessments will be discussed with students prior to the end of this school year.
We wish you a happy summer filled with many memorable reading experiences. Thank you for supporting summer reading.
Sincerely,
John Fairchild
