Guidelines for Conduct at School Dances

School dances are for PHS students and their guests. All guests must be high school students or recent PHS graduates and must be signed in at the main office BEFORE the dance, with a phone number of their parent/guardian. With the exception of special events, school dances run from 8 PM to 11 PM. No one will be admitted to a dance after 9 PM without the Principal’s prior permission. Students may not leave the dance and return, and students at the dance must remain in the dance area unless accompanied by a chaperone.

Dances will be chaperoned by six to eight PHS faculty/staff. Two chaperones will be designated as security. If it is necessary to remove a student from a dance, the parent/guardian will be contacted to pick up the student at the dance, and the student will be referred to the Principal for follow-up.

The District recognizes that school dances are an important part of student life. The District also recognizes that it has a tremendous concern for the safety and welfare of our students. It is important that each student truly understand the expectations of the students at our dances. To ensure this PHS requires a signed contract by all students stating that they understand the rules and regulations of the school as regards to dances. This contract must be signed by the parents/guardians and by the students. A student is not allowed to attend a dance without the signed contract. The contracts are distributed prior to the first dance of each school year.

Dress and Behavior:
Appropriate dress and behavior are expected. The school dance is an extension of the school day. Student should refer to the student handbook or code of conduct for requirements.

Inappropriate Dancing:
As a school activity inappropriate dancing will not be tolerated. School chaperones will monitor this throughout and ask those acting inappropriately to cease the behavior. Failure to comply will result in the student’s parents/guardians to be contacted and the students to leave or be escorted from the dance.

Substance Abuse:
Confirmed use or being under the influence of drugs or alcohol while in attendance at a school dance will result in loss of privileges to attend any school dance for a period of eight months commencing at the time of the occurrence.

First Offense may be reduced to four months if the following takes place:
1. Student participates in drug and alcohol counseling
2. The student undertakes a community service project developed in conjunction with the guidance counselor and school administration.

There will also be three days of out of school suspension and loss of leadership positions in the school for the remainder of the school year.

Second Offense: The student will not be allowed to attend dances for a twelve-month school calendar. There also will be a five-day out of school suspension and loss of leadership positions for twelve months.

Third Offense: The students will not be allowed to attend any dances for the remainder of their school career. There also will be a five-day out of school suspension and loss of leadership positions for twelve months.

Student Sign in and Guest Procedure:
There will be one guest allowed per student. All students will register and sign in when they come to the dance.
