Overview:This is a guided reading and discussion of The Voyage of the Narwhal, fictionalized account of an Arctic expedition in search of Sir John Franklin’s lost expedition of 1845-47. Students will examine, discuss and evaluate the technology and science of the 19th century, especially as it applies to Arctic exploration. They will discuss, examine and evaluate the relationships between the characters within this novel, paying a particular attention to the classism, sexism, and racism of 19th century USA. Students will create an original map, write four different essay and create a newspaper, composed f articles, editorials, cartoons and advertisements corresponding to the story. They will examine and discuss the ways in which technology and society have changed.
