STORIES UNDER THE SURFACE: ARCHAEOLOGISTS UNCOVER THE PAST an interdisciplinary social studies/ English Unit

Authors: Mal Cutaiar, Kate Messner

Grade Level: Middle School

Overview:This is an integrated English/Social Studies units focusing on archaeologists as facilitators who bring old stories back to life. There will be a focus on the stage of prehistoric development in the Americas, with a special emphasis on local archaeological sites. Through the reading of a young adult novel and many articles and poems, the viewing of several video segments, and visits from two guest speakers in the field, students will discover the role of archaeologists and the controversy that sometimes surrounds their work. They will also take part in a simulated archaeological dig, using correct archaeological procedures and later interpreting the artifacts they found to tell the story of the people who left them.
