Overview:This unit focuses on the study of plants with an emphasis on Dendrology (Study of Trees). The unit includes a number of life science topics related to the plant kingdom. Examples of these topics would include but are not limited to the following: Learning about the characteristics that all plants share, what plants need to live in a particular environment, the various types of plants and their characteristics, the characteristics of gymnosperms and angiosperms, the structures and functions of seed plants, and the process of photosynthesis. Relevant vocabulary will be introduced. Students will explore the importance of plants in their lives and the world around them.
Students will also learn to use taxonomic (dichotomous) keys and the scientific naming system.Connection to NYS Learning Standards: MST Standard 1 Analysis, Inquiry and Design, Standard 4 Science.
