Overview: Through the reading of the novel, There's An Owl in the Shower, by Jean Craighead George, the students will learn about the endangered spotted owl and the ecosystem of the old growth forests of the western U.S. The students will then apply this knowledge and complete cooperative group research projects about endangered animals of the Adirondacks and along the east coast of the U.S. This will be an interdisciplinary unit including ELA, Science and Social Studies. They will explore causes for endangerment and extinction, and efforts being made to halt endangerment of these animals.
