Author: Sarah McCarty, Mary Gertsch-Cochran

Grade Level: Grade 1

Overview: The strand of story structure and development is continuous through all grade levels of the Odyssey ELA program. Through the use of different kinds of literature, students begin to see the elements that are necessary in telling a story, and the variations that can be made based upon the genre. The learning experience will guide students through the elements of fantasy literature including characters, settings, and patterns in plot. The use of fantasy with this age group will build upon their natural imagination as they apply their learning to author original stories.
